Nova Scotia has specific regulations for working in isolation. By law, working alone or in isolation means working in circumstances where it is complex or even impossible to provide assistance to the worker.
Isolated work is allowed in Nova Scotia, but employers are subject to specific obligations. They must first identify whether the worker exposed to isolated work is exposed to certain risks or dangers, and limit the consequences as far as possible.
Section 43 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act authorizes a worker to refuse to perform work if he has reason to believe it is dangerous for his health, safety or that of another person.
The Occupational Health and Safety Regulation requires the employer to put in place a written procedure to ensure the well-being of the lone worker, in which the attendance statement must be included. The employer must therefore, if his employees are in an isolated work situation, equip them with a communication device and set up an emergency intervention procedure. The NEOVIGIE solution makes it possible to monitor attendance automatically and regularly in order to allow companies to have a means of monitoring employees in an isolated environment.
